Supporting Others In Distress

It seems that more and more we hear of subscribers being in distress one way or another. It also seems that there are always friends, relatives, or loved ones who desire to help and instead, their well-meant intentions then end up in distress for themselves. Somehow, their approach to helping their friend or loved one ends up in conflict with one another. Why is this so and how should one approach giving help to another? What do we say and do to help a struggling friend or family member? How do we empower others in need? Are we working with the cause or the effects?

We love to receive emails from SOUL SOOTHERS subscribers. We love to learn of your experiences and to connect back with you personally. But for those of you who are working through challenges, we have had many struggles with the wording of our replies ... just how do we choose the right words to offer support?

For those of us on the spiritual path, we have been taught that the right words and actions are extremely important. While it's important that they accurately represent what we believe to be true, it's equally important that we don't foster our beliefs ... those that are not divine truths ... onto others. For example, I believe that everything that happens to us is perfect for our learning, but the way that one experiences this belief may differ greatly from the way I experience it. Therefore, the truth or belief may be the same, but we each experience it based on what is to be learned. If people who write are suffering, my heart can break in response to their pain, but at the same time, I know there’s divine grace in what’s happening. Although pain may be a powerful force for awakening and it can bring great gifts, this may not be accepted as part of another's belief.

Whatever the case, it is not our place to judge whether something is good or bad. If we sympathize with their situations, it suggests that their experiences are bad or unfair ... and that is not the case. It’s also not our place to give advice ... for two reasons. First, we should not give advice unless it was specifically asked for it. Second, our truth may not be your truth ... and your truth is what matters.

It’s not going to help someone in distress if we steal the focus of the interaction away from them by sharing how our experiences relate with theirs, i.e., "I know just how you feel. Here’s what happened to me..."

When we understand how soul works through us, we see that our aim in supporting someone is not to get rid of their pain and suffering. Instead, we want to assist them to understand what the pain is trying to teach them ... to find meaning in their distress. So how do we support others in suffering? Here are some perspectives that I've been taught may help:

- Simply BE with them.
- Be fully present to them ... be open, attentive and aware with body, mind and soul.
- Refrain from judging, sympathizing or monopolizing the conversation.
- Refrain from offering advice unless they specifically ask for it. Even then, it’s best to ask them questions that will lead them to their own answers. In this way, we do not take their power from them.
- Be present to our own experience and authentic in our feelings, but highlight only those beliefs that are from divine truth, i.e., As part of the natural law of Free Will, we experience our belief systems. This way, we live our own truth and we allow the divine truth to create the space for the other person to live theirs.
- Through questions, help them explore their underlying fears, payoffs, choices, aspirations and meaning. Support them in seeing new perspectives by offering some that may come from your own truths without expressing your particular belief.

Each day, we're exploring how to be fully present to others, especially through emails ... one of the most difficult ways to use words. I know that at higher dimensions, distance and time have no reality. While we will try to be there for you when we receive your email ... no matter what distances and time lags are involved ... please excuse us if the words we write to affirm our connection seem indifferent, because our intention will always be to honor your experience.

Separation or Unity Is A Choice
by Michael Bonamassa, Sr.

Separation or unity are among the choices we have in life. Poverty is attained through the choice of 'separation,' while abundance is ours in 'unity.'

We must watch for those times when we perceive ourselves to be separate from the rest of our world. When we find ourselves feeling uncomfortable, threatened or isolated, bring in the thought that there’s only one universal life force ... that we are all ONE.

When we perceive differences between us in our thoughts and behavior, we might remember that these are merely different expressions of the energy that makes us who we are. We must release judgment as to whether those differences are right or wrong, or good or bad. We must do this by droping the labels that divide our world into pieces, and simply appreciate the rich variety of ways that energy can manifest as form.

Let us join in the consciousness of achieving a culture rich in contrasting values. Together, let us weave a less arbitrary social fabric by recognizing the whole of our human possibilities ... one of accepting and allowing that there's a fitting place for each diverse human gift.

If your finances are not meeting your needs, it is telling you that you have internal programs that are sabotaging your prosperity. Break free of your financial prison by shifting your prosperity consciousness from managing money to thinking prosperously and manifesting abundance by living in abundance. We experience abundance by integrating new perspectives! We get no more and no less than what we believe we deserve!

Yes, what we believe is what we get. Thinking prosperity helps us identify and release unconscious beliefs uttered through the self-talk that sabotages us. Establish in their place a belief system that will attract prosperity. Living in abundance merely means understanding and participating in the spiritual laws of abundance.(Because so many find it difficult to understand the Law of Abundance and how it really works, I will provide clarity in another article next week entitled "Understanding The Law Of Abundance".)

We attract people, events and circumstances to our lives according to who we are. And who we are has much to do with what we believe. Come to know and understand that only when we truly recognize the riches within ... and that we are all ONE ... will we fully live in wealth and start manifesting true prosperity in our lives.

That Which Is Inside Of Us

What we want to share with you today is that we are entirely responsible for everything that we attract. We attract absolutely everything that happens to us. Although it may sound strange, we only attract what we have inside us. Hence, we will attract violence only if we have violence inside us ... we will attract love only if we have love inside us ... we attract distress in life because that's what we have inside of us!

Instead of trying to avoid negative things happening to you … rather than complaining that only bad things happen to you … look at things as if they were a mirror image of your inner self. And express gratitude. Thank those who caused you pain for showing you what part of yourself you need to work on. And work on it. Show your gratitude and work. This is the process.

If you attract a distressful situation, recognize that this situation is simply a reflection of your inner violence. Be aware of this, and enter into contact with your inner distress. Look back on a distressful situation that you once experienced and cry, shout, kick out, go through it all, and remove the negative energy inside your heart.

Remove this density, and open up your heart so that love may enter. And this way, you will be able to cleanse each new situation or event as it arises ... always thanking and cleansing. Is it easy? Yes for some ... no for others. It depends on if you're really ready to wake up to a realm of love in your heart.

Healing Life's Deepest Problems
In order to become conscious of the unconscious programs that are causing pain in your life, it's important that you Identify and release the deeper emotions and fears that are holding you back. This is necessary in order to attain new levels of self-acceptance and personal responsibility. Resistance, anxiety, stress, depression, unhappiness and worry are all doings of the Ego; all of which lowers one's self-esteem. As you increase your awareness, you will build self-esteem, self-confidence and serenity. Master the process of block busting by breaking through those inner battles of guilt and resentment that are bringing your energy vibrations down.

First, know that the challenges you meet in life are intentionally brought to you in order for you to open up to higher consciousness. Every block is there to help you release the personal, limited viewpoint of the ego and to open to the impersonal, unlimited glory of your soul. The meaning of life comes with knowing the greater truth of who you really are ... an unlimited multi-dimensional being of light and love. Working through these problems is the only path to meaning, fulfillment and spiritual growth.

How do you do this?

1. Go within to identify and release the fundamental from any false beliefs that are holding you back.
2. Truly feel your feelings and master the secret of self-acceptance which is the key to change. This means accepting and allowing your experiences without judging them as being 'good' or 'bad'.
3. Take responsibility for your life. Integrate the dualities and embrace the negatives and the positives, for they are there for you to learn and grow from.

It is emphasized that you must balance the need to "do" (ego) with the need to "be" (Spirit). It is in this balance that soul exists. Therefore, the key to living and creating soul is to have both Spirit and your human nature equally present and in harmony in your consciousness. Yes, there is much pain with distressful experiences, but the problem is not the pain. Your life will change when you shift your perspective away from that of the ego.

Like it or not, pain gets your attention ... and it comes in many ways other than through physical pain. Emotions can be painful, as can mere conversations/discussions with others ... especially with those who love you. It's not the words spoken to you, although you may reflect your response as such .. it's your interpretation of what is said ... all of which you can be sure comes from the ego when your response/reaction is filled with the low energy of 'anger'. Pain can also come from uncomfortable thoughts or even dreams which appear as nightmares. However, you must recognize that the pain associated therewith is a challenge to the ego's perception that it is in complete control of your life. When you come to this realization, this opens the door to receive your soul's guidance.

Paradoxically, you can only rid yourself of the problem by moving through the illusion that it really is. The next time you feel "poor me", take time to meditate and stop and ask "What needs to change? What does my soul want me to learn from this experience?" You can't go back and make a brand new start, but you can start from now and make a brand new ending. It's important to become clear about your own spirituality and what it takes to grow ... which is more than what you think in your head, but rather what you believe in your heart. Discover how to be more authentic and how to live more of your potential by creating a clear growth path for yourself and know that you don't do this by looking outside of yourself and giving your power to others, but by going within.

In short, explore beyond what you think the problem is and what change it takes to move beyond it and grow. Pay closer attention to your thoughts and know that all resistance and thoughts of fear come from the ego. Allow your soul to clarify your next growth step by paying closer attention to your perception which has been coloring the way your looking at the problem. I promise you that once you identify the false belief involving a certain aspect of your life as being "bad", the problem will disappear.

A Special Blessing to You and Yours ...
Until next week ...
These things, we warmly wish for you-

May your spirit soar throughout the vast cathedral of your being
And may your mind whirl cartwheels of creativity.
May each day bring you its own individual wonder
And may you break through the barriers of the past
by looking at the blessings of the present.

Love and Light,
Mike & Sandy
